I had the opportunity to co-host a pitch event on Twitter this week, and it was eye-opening in all the best ways!
It helps to have a “pitner” (pitch partner, just go with it) that offers different skills than your own. I had the pleasure of co-hosting SFPit with Jayme (@JaymeLPeck) who was the master of the site and co-captain of the comms.
From crafting announcements to agents/small presses/agencies to engagement and advertising, everything was a fantastic learning experience that offered a different view into the writing community and surrounding components.
Sci-Fi can often, and easily, get lost in the woodwork. The most common statements seen were about how it’s nice to see a dedicated event to the Sci-Fi side of the community. Folks were enthusiastic early on, with months to go.
As we got closer, we saw people start building support lists, asking questions, letting us know what was missing. All of it was so encouraging, and it made me realize that writers who actively participate in the community shape these events more than they know.
You, we, add to the community in the present with our participation. With our feedback, sharing our journeys, and coming together to celebrate each other, we shape the future of the community. And, maybe one of my favorite parts, when we call out scams, give advice, and welcome those who might have been unsure how to jump in, we protect the integrity and growth of the community as a place where all can engage.
While I had two pitches of my own, I wanted to make sure I was more available to support from the @SciFiPitch account. And, wow, did I see all of the above. To see the support in real time, to see people share pieces of themselves, excitement for others, filled me gratitude.
I guess all I needed was to see things from a different side to get back to that grateful headspace that has been all but absent lately.
